US Civil War, CSS Virginia (Previously The USS Merrimac) Commemorative Tie Clip

Description: Offered for sale is this interesting commemorative/promotional tie clip, created by the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce in 1956 (the booklet is dated 1956). The tie clip is a facsimile of the CSS Virginia, a Confederate ironclad ship built in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was originally the USS Merrimack (the actual correct spelling), but was burned to the waterline by the US Navy to avoid capture by Confederate forces. She was rebuilt into the CSS Virginia, which fought a famous battle over two days in the Hampton Roads, ultimately fighting to an inconclusive draw with the USS Monitor, a Union ironclad. Fun fact: my great-grandfather was a gunner aboard the CSS Virginia. This tie clip has been in my family since as long as I can remember. The underlining of a passage in the booklet, concerning the Virginia's crew, was undoubtedly made by my father or grandfather. I think the pin may be gold plated, because it has never tarnished in all these many years, but the base metal is not gold. The box has some age spots, as do I. The booklet is "as-new" except for the underlined passage described above. This item needs to go to someone who shares an interest in history. I do not want it to end up in a Goodwill store. Thank you for looking!
