Description: Scarce 1737 Hand-Colored Folio Copperplate Engraving from: PHYTANTHOZAICONOGRAPHIA,SiveConspectus aliquot millium, tam Indigenarum quam Exoticarum, ex quatuor mundi partibus longâ annorum serie indefesoque studio N. 23 Aloe Americana tuberosa yucce folüs An original antique, hand-colored botanical color mezzotint engraving from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann's beautiful work, Phytanthoza Iconographia, volume 1, after a painting by Georg Dionysus Ehret. It's extremely rare, I find none of this plate listed anywhere, except as reproductions. The Volumes:Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s monumental work Phytanthoza Iconographia comprised over 4,000 plants and flowers depicted on 1,025 plates, produced in 8 volumes between 1737-1745, making this series one of the most comprehensive and finest color plate florilegia ever produced. Many of the superb plates of this important florilegium are engraved after drawings by the eminent botanical artist Georg Dionysus (G.D.), the dominant influence in botanical art during the 18th century. The technique used of mezzotint colored in the plate is unusual & produces a rich, bold modelling.Full title of work: Phytanthoza Iconographia, sive conspectus aliquot millium, tam indigenarum quam exoticarum, ex quatuor mundi partibus… plantarum, arborum, fruticum, florum, fructuum, fungorum, &c.English translation of title: 'Phythanthoza Iconographia, or comprehensive survey of thousands of native and foreign plants, from all four corners of the world, the result of many years of tireless study, Plants, Trees, Shrubs, Herbs, Flowers, Fruits and Mushrooms, etc' The Author:Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (13 March 1683 Gardelegen, Germany – 1741),[1] apothecary and botanist, was born in Gardelegen son of the barber, Matthias Christian Weinmann. What is known of his early life is that he settled in Regensburg, or Ratisbon as it was known in 1710, and found work as the assistant of an apothecary. Weinmann prospered in Regensburg so that he was able in 1712 to purchase a house and apothecary shop. His business interests flourished, allowing him the freedom to indulge in his pursuit of botany. He created a botanical garden in Regensburg, published the Catalogus Alphabetico ordine exhibens Pharmaca in 1723 and contributed botanical notes as "Observationes und Anmerkungen" in the "Breslauer Sammlungen", & the present florilegium Phytanthoza iconographia between 1737 and 1745 The Artist:Georg Dionysius Ehret (30 January 1708 – 9 September 1770) was a German botanist and entomologist known for his botanical illustrations. Ehret was born in Germany to Ferdinand Christian Ehret, a gardener and competent draughtsman, and Anna Maria Ehret. Beginning his working life as a gardener's apprentice near Heidelberg, he became one of the most influential European botanical artists of all time. Condition:Appears to be in excellent condition for a 287-year-old engraving. The hand-coloring appears to remain sharp & brilliant as the day it was painted. Very little age-toning for a print this old with few light spots or antique character. It's printed on creamy, thick, handmade chain-lined paper. Please peruse the detailed photos. These prints are very old & may have minor imperfections expected with age, such as some typical age-toning of the paper, oxidation of the old original watercolors, spots, text-offsetting, artifacts from having been bound into a book, etc. Please examine the photos & details carefully.Text Page(s): This one comes without original text page. I've added a scan of a sample cover page from one of the volumes to the listing photos for reference, it's not part of the listing. About this Gorgeous Plant:Agave americana, commonly known as the century plant, maguey, or American aloe, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Asparagaceae. It is native to Mexico and the United States, specifically Texas. This plant is widely cultivated worldwide for its ornamental value and has become naturalized in various regions, including Southern California, the West Indies, South America, the Mediterranean Basin, Africa, the Canary Islands, India, China, Thailand, and Australia.Despite being called "American aloe" in common parlance, Agave americana is not a member of the same family as Aloe, although it falls under the same order, Asparagales. The common name "century plant" stems from its semelparous nature of flowering only once at the end of its long life. After flowering, the plant dies but produces adventitious shoots from the base, allowing its growth to continue. Size: 14-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches approximately.Shipping: Multiple prints combine into one USPS Flat-Rate envelope.
