Monroe County, TN, Confederate Believes Sherman's Men May Have Stolen Note

Description: Monroe County was one of the few East Tennessee counties to support secession at the outbreak of the American Civil War. Others in the area supported the Union. On June 8, 1861, the county voted in favor of Tennessee's Ordinance of Secession by a margin of 1,096 to 774. In November 1863, Sherman found himself and his troops in Monroe County, believing they were needed to back up the forces of Gen. Burnside. However, the Confederates were defeated but Sherman’s troops were on their way through the bitter winter. Once they arrived, Sherman was furious. Sherman’s troops were known to wreak havoc on Confederate sympathizers. JOSEPH A. PECK claimed in a sworn statement that a financial note of his had been taken by Sherman’s men, at some point, or was mislaid or lost. One-page, affidavit, approximately 6 ¼ x 7 ½, “Personally appeared Monroe County before me J.H. Kelso in said county, JOSEPH A. PECK and appear duly swearing according to law said that certain note that he held on Mathew M. Smallin for three dollars and 95 cts about the first of the year 1859...The said note was taken by some one of Sherman’s men or was mislaid or lost, swearing to and subscribed before me this the 26th day of December 1866.” Revenue stamp present. Peck was a merchant, selling between $10,000 and $20,000 yearly. He was a member and an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a Mason and a Democrat. In 1861, he organized a Confederate Company and was made Captain, but the company was not accepted because the men were twelve months’ men instead of three-years men. Peck became known as Maj. Joseph A. Peck. Spelling corrected and punctuation added in transcription. A two-and-a-half-inch piece is missing from the top, affecting a few words. Document is signed by Peck and Kelso.
