Description: Kitchen Sink Press trading card On the front of the card: a critical moment of stress in the turbulent life of Goodman Beaver, all-American innocent. Created by Harvey Kurtzman and given an- imation by artist Will Elder, Goodman's adventures are collected in a Kitchen Sink Press book titled, ap- propriately, GOODMAN BEAVER. The book is available in an economical softcover as well as a hardcover signed by both Kurtzman and Elder. The four stories in the collection originally appeared in the early 1960s in Kurtzman's HELP! magazine. Kurtzman and Elder had worked together since the early 1950s and be- came famous in tandem when Kurtzman created MAD magazine. Elder's wildly detailed art was given its best display when it illustrated scripts by Kurtzman. By 1959, the pair had worked together through two more magazines, TRUMP and HUMBUG. Kurtzman modeled Goodman Beaver after Voltaire's Candide, an inno- cent punished by the realities of life. Through Good- man, the two collaborators sought "the gnawing truth behind satire, 91 as Elder puts it. The stories look at popular American culture and attitudes, attacking them fiercely yet humorously. At the center is the wistful victim of society, Goodman Beaver. _gsrx_vers_1480 (GS 9.1.1 (1480))
