At age nineteen, Herbst found employment as a silver designer, demonstrating an early aptitude for art and drawing. He studied at the Art Students’ League in New York City. Herbst was also a musician and played in an orchestra on the S.S Manhattan, a luxury passenger ocean liner. While enjoying his primary career as a musician, Herbst was earning a reputation as a skilled artist and illustrator, selling his illustrations as early as 1918. His commercial work included magazine covers and illustrations, often for popular pulp publications such as Adventure. His illustrations included western as well as war-time themes and social scenes. Herbst also painted landscape and cityscape paintings in an Impressionistic style. The artist maintained a studio in Newark and was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City and a member of the Musician’s Union of New York and New Jersey. His work can be found in the Brandywine River Museum of Art.
