Description: GALLERY LISTING In keeping with eBay policies this item is being listed with intent to sell. Until it does I’m also providing it here for a point of research & reference as I have found no other information on it aside from what I’m presenting. Enjoy my research and I hope you find it interesting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Among the rarest of all Civil War bullet molds is the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal brass .58 caliber gang mold. It is assigned the highest rarity (R5) in the reference book ‘Reloading Tools of the Black Powder Era’, by Tom Rowe and Ed Curtis. A mold similar to this is pictured in volume 2 of that series (reference the attached pictures). So far I’ve identified 3 unique design characteristics of this mold (Type I, Type II, and Type III). Each complete weighs nearly 3 1/2 pounds. The molds are a work of art for their size, aesthetics, rarity, functionality, and history. The 3 types are pictured together once for reference only. I identify this mold as a ‘Type III’ variant, with the smooth, Arsenal-finished handles & body (no dimpled handles such as seen in Type II). The other major identifying feature (unique to this type) is the absence of the vertical line separating the mold blocks from the handles. This type is smooth from end to end. It is marked both on the plugs and the mold itself with a ‘1’ over a ‘US’. Originally I thought these were from Allegheny Arsenal as another example is marked with a ‘US’ over an ‘A’. However with the number in place of the letter in this example I know longer believe that is the case. There are some minor but noticeable variations in the handle characteristics but I’m not currently listing that as a discriminating type factor. Reference my other Harpers Ferry Gallery molds for an example of ‘Type I’ and ‘Type II’ Please check out the multiple auctions I’ve listed which include high end cased set tools (for percussion pistols, rifles, and revolvers), Civil War era bullet molds/moulds, early 1800s-Civil War US buttons, lots of CDVs, Civil War bullets, and items from the collection of George Moller and Senator Charles Ford estate (of Robin Rapley documentation provenance).
