Description: STK: SWORD-GAPBrought to you by CAMARILLO TRADERS specialists in new, used & antique arms, collectible militaria and rustic ephemera Civil War 1864 US Federal M1840 Light Artillery Short Saber Sword (Marked C.L.) & Metal Scabbard Manufacturer: Unbranded, or Scrubbed Model: M1840 Blade Length: 32.00" Marking: C.L. TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is Civil War Model 1840 Artillery sword and scabbard. There were two types of artillery categories. One for defending the coast with large heavy large cannons and the other was the field artillery that accompanied an army during marching. The US started with M1833 Dragoon sabers and upgraded to the M1840 light artillery saber. They were used by mounted artillery officers and the cavalry. Several Confederate sword makers like Leech & Rigdon of Memphis and Boyle & Gamble in Richmond Virginia copied the design. Overall, this sword is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The pommel and knuckle-bow guard are securely fastened to the hilt. They have scattered impact marks, draglines and discoloration. The brass finish has turned a darker gold patina color. The leather grip has no rips or tears, but it does have a few very small scrapes and finish loss. The brass braided chord is securely fastened around the grip with no loose fraying material. The coloring is a darker gold patina color. The blade's spine, sides and fullers have light erosion, oxidation and discoloration. There are no nicks or dings on the blade's cutting edge, but part of the edge has erosion. It appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The remaining finish is in the white, but has started to turn a darker patina color. The right ricasso is marked "U.S. / C.L. / (1)864". The "1" is worn off, but other swords from this time period have the date stamped in that location. The scabbard is in Fair - Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. We gave it this rating because it is missing one of the suspension rings, otherwise it would be a Good - Very Good rating. Both suspension ring mounts are securely fastened to the body. Again, one ring is missing, but the other is securely fastened - rotates and swivels correctly. It has oxidized. The throat, body and drag have scattered light erosion, impact marks, oxidation and scrapes. Most of the nickel plated finish has worn off and the unfinished metal has started to turn a darker gray patina color. There are no visible markings on the scabbard. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your American Civil War era collection, or a sword collection in general.
