Description: This is the third card (WHA003) of the Hockey History Archive's new WHA-focused "Rebel League" Stars Series, a limited time printing. The 1977 cult-classic movie "Slap Shot" (starring Paul Newman) featured a character named "Ogie Ogelthorpe," a mean criminal goon who made a career beating up other hockey players on the ice. Many people are unaware that Ogelthorpe was based on a real person whom amazingly had done many of the outrageous things Ogie Ogelthorpe was portrayed as doing in the film. The real life person in question was Bill "Goldie" Goldthorpe, who not only amassed huge penalty minutes for fighting as a semi-pro player in the minor leagues and the short-lived but colorful competitor league to the NHL the World Hockey Association (WHA), but he was also one of the most criminally arrested players in hockey. Goldthorpe never broke into the NHL but he eventually achieved legend status as one of the most feared hockey players outside the NHL, and the movie Slap Shot turned him into an almost mythical figure. The Hockey History Archive (HHA) thus created this card to honor the legendary menace of Bill Goldthorpe whom will forever be linked to the movie Slap Shot and Ogie Ogelthorpe, and too often is forgotten as somebody who played in the Rebel League the WHA. This is a rare limited edition card and it is almost impossible to find Goldthorpe cards of this quality, so get it while you can as it will not be available indefinitely.
