1943 World War II PHILIPPINES Veteran 5 PESOS NOTE Japanese OCCUPATION CURRENCY

Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1943 World War II PHILIPPINES Veteran 5 PESOS NOTE Japanese OCCUPATION CURRENCY Description This is a veteran, World War II era, "Five Pesos" note that was issued in 1943 by the Japanese for the occupied Philippine Islands.   The Japanese bombed the Philippines the same day they bombed Pearl Harbor. December 7, 1942, "The day that will live in infamy". They landed troops in the Philippines on December 10. Manila was taken January 2, Bataan fell April 9, and finally Corregidor on May 6, forcing MacArthur's famous "I Shall Return" statement when he left. He did, and these notes soon became worthless.   "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (General Issues 1368-1960) by Albert Pick. #110. "Japanese Invasion Money of World War II" by Chattanooga Coin. #P-9. Face: {38} • 0261749 • {In red, plate numbers 1-51 used} • Black on pale green and yellow underprint. • Rizal Monument at left. • Pale FIVE counter at right over watermark of a banana tree.   The Japanese "liberated" the Philippines and set up a puppet government. They used the Rizal Monument because José Rizal had been a Philippine patriot during the Spanish period, and they wanted to announce the new "freedom".   Having one of these could get you shot. The guerrillas were still fighting in the interior of the islands and one of these in your pocket would make you a collaborator. On the other hand, the guerrillas issued their own currency and the Japanese carried guns too. They were both "forced" issues.   Back: Brown with lavender background. • Claimant's Association Stamp.   Formed in 1953 on behalf of Filipinos left holding stranded quantities of worthless Japanese invasion money, the "Japanese War Notes Claimant's Association of the Philippines", mission was to hold both the US and Japanese government's liable for the redemption of war currency. So, while "Japanese" pesos had been valued prior to the war's end upon pain of death, those same pesos were now valued as a liability of their issuer. Given the possibility of redemption, an old invasion note was now worth more than zero. When their case was eventually heard in 1967 it was dismissed.   The Note: A veteran. It has been around the block. It has some holes and stains but no edge or body tears. A prime piece of quickly fading World War II history. The note will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it.
