Description: Scarce large commemorative medallion relating to Herbert Hoover's election as US President in 1928. Measures 2 3/4" across, heavy. The front has a nice rendering of Hoover signed "J K", and the back says "J M Beattie Commemorating 1928 Election, Louis S Cates". Oddly, between what appears to be two tomahawks. The side is marked "Medallic Art Co, NY". Very good condition with light year, original patina. I can only find two other of these medals with this back sold over the years on Worthpoint, and each had a different man's name at the top, but still Louis S Cates at the bottom. Like Hoover originally, Cates was a mining engineer, so likely he had these individually made for his friends to celebrate Hoover's win--truly a one of a kind piece! Unfortunately, the stock market crashed shortly after Hoover's election, and things didn't go too well from there.
