This sale is for an 1865 Indian Head Cent #1, which I estimate to be in Overall About Good, or less than Good condition, with an ERROR Rim, and Strike! This Historic Civil War Indian Head still has a Nice Outline, Date and Legend (Lettering), with Most of LIBERTY Readable. It has a Nice Bronze Tone, and a Decent Overall Look with a Respectable reverse- considering the Errors! *Careful examination of the coin reveals that the rim was never formed correctly, leading to an Error Strike. Parts of date and legend are worn smooth. Head is outlined, with nearly all details worn away. Legend and date are readable but very weak and merging into rim. Entire design is partially worn away. Bow is merged with the wreath.” *Please do grade for yourself using the pictures. Please hit “Contact Seller” at the Top with any serious inquiries or comments. I have watched Indian Heads go from face value, $.01 to $10.00 in 30 years. That’s 33% per year- Steady. “Cent doesn’t have to be a Four-Letter-Word. One can say Penny instead.” –UpsideDowTime Line Surrounding this Historic Civil War Cent: 1859: Congressman Abe Lincoln campaigns for President. 1860: Abraham Lincoln is Elected and Inaugurated the 16th President of The United States of America. The election and inauguration were held in the same year back then. 1861: The Civil War breaks out, and will kill more Americans than all other wars combined, to date. 1863: The nation runs out of Pennies, which had been recently issued to Solve commerce needs- because of Hoarding of the Copper-Nickel Cents, and the need for metals for the war. Civil War Tokens (privately made, supplemental coins) spring up and the Government issues Fractional Currency (Paper Change) to solve the shortage. 1864: The U.S. Mint cheapens the Copper-Nickel penny mixture to Bronzed Copper (copper thinned with 5% zinc), and increases production. Congress outlaws Civil War Tokens due to the Lack of Control over them. The Mint starts with an 1864 Copper-Nickel Cent; Stops production and Switches to Bronze; and then stops again and adds designer James Longacre's initial L, and returns the Pointed Bust to differentiate this last coin from the first, and more common 1864 Bronze Cent. The Civil War winds down.1865: January- With the penny crisis solved, Congress Formally Abolishes Slavery. Lee finally surrenders a few months later, in April. Abraham Lincoln is assassinated just five days after Lee surrenders. Arlington National Cemetery is later built on Lee’s Front Yard, to Forever Shame him, and to Forever Honor American Soldiers killed in the line of duty. Approximately 700,000 Americans were killed in The U.S. Civil War. ★★★★★ Most Coins are listed in Two Store Categories each- by Date and Grade, so you can search either way.
